

There are 21 Mongolian Aymags. Most of these aimags have been created in the 1930-40s by the establishment of the young Mongolian People's Republic, which decided of an administrative break-down of the country. Some of them, like the one of Darkhan or Erdenet, have been founded more recently (1994). They merely reflect the economic and demographic evolution of the country. Accordingly, Darkhan is associated with the industrial development of this favourable geographical area.
Each AYMAG is then sub-divided in SUMS. The amount of these SUMS may differ from one aimag to another. The aimag of Arkhangai encompasses 19 sums whereas Darkhan only 4. The wholesome of SUMS, throughout Mongolia, fetches 333.
All these SUMS are sub-divided in BAGS. These BAGS are the smallest administrative elements of the rural Mongolia. There are altogether 1564 Bags in Mongolia. Towns (> 50,000 p) are not split into BAGS but into DISTRICTS. UlaanBaatar consists in 9 of such.
